Lots to help school boards make informed decisons about health issues at this NSBA conference

This year's conference is providing a great opportunity for school board members to learn about a wide range of health issues, their impact on learning, and policies and practices that will make a difference for students and their success in school.

This morning I attended a session at which Orange County, FL, school board member Joie Cadle and Debbie Watson, of the Winter Park Health Foundation, showcased what they do in partnership to promote health and learning. From a mental health program called CHILL to providing school nurses, Orange County is taking seriously the adage that healthy students learn better.

Another session this morning focused on physical education, with presenters from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent School Health. And more sessions are unfolding daily. Later this afternoon, catch the session on asthma, a very serious chronic condition that results in 15 million school days missed.

As Director, School Health Programs, I'm so proud that NSBA recognizes the integral link of health and learning and the opportunity that schools have to contribute addressing the serious health issues facing our nation. For more information on NSBA's School Health Programs, visit the Health and Wellness Pavilion in the Exhibit Hall, drop by our display at NA Central (Room W207C), and visit our website at www.nsba.org/SchoolHealth.
