Excited about another excellent NSBA Annual Conference? NSBA’s School Health Programs would like to point out a few sessions that you won’t want to miss! Don’t pass up the opportunity to build on what school leaders already know: the importance of health in schools and its effect on academic achievement.
Here are just a few of the great health-related sessions being offered this year in San Diego:
Talking Back to Big Tobacco: Youth Advocating for Policy Change (Saturday, April 4 at 8am)
Meet young people who have taken a stand against youth-targeted tobacco industry tactics. Learn the background on the youth tobacco problem, the latest tobacco industry strategies, and how school districts can work with youth to promote a healthy, tobacco-free environment.
Effective Asthma Management Is Possible in Schools: Lessons to Improve Attendance, Learning, and Student Wellbeing (Saturday, April 4 at 3:45pm)
In this session, presenters will showcase strategies on how to successfully document the number of students with asthma and provide evidence-based support and information to the entire school community, including students, teachers, administrators, and families. Presenters are members of the Leadership Forum for Healthy Students and Healthy Schools, which strengthens collaborative relationships in states to address school-based asthma management.
Making the Connection: Healthy Development and Academic Success (Sunday, April 5 at 2pm)
Join Jacquelyn G. Sowers, Program Administrator for Coordinated School Health, Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, for perspectives and research findings that school boards can use to support their commitment to the twin goals of learning and health.
Partnering with Parents: A Key Strategy for Improving Both Student Health and Academic Achievement (Monday, April 6 at 8am)
In this session, representatives from a variety of organizations who work at the national, state, district, and school levels will share their perspectives, proven strategies, tools, and success stories on parent involvement.
Building Community Connections: School-Hospital Partnerships to Address Wellness and Childhood Obesity (Monday, April 6 at 11:15am)
This session will present interview summaries and the lessons learned from a project – conducted jointly between NSBA and the American Hospital Association (AHA), – that examined three effective school-hospital partnerships across the country, and offer recommendations on how to develop sound, collaborative health partnerships in your district including guiding principles and action steps.
Dropouts and Disparities: Broadening Your Perspective to Improve High School Completion (Monday, April 6 at 2pm)
Education leaders know all too well that dropping out of school means less opportunity for employment and an increased likelihood of poverty for students. And public health leaders know that dropping out is associated with various health and social problems. Moreover, data show that poor educational and health outcomes occur disproportionately among poor and minority youth. In this session, you’ll explore how education and public health leaders can join forces to achieve shared goals of increasing the number of students that are well educated, healthy, and successful.
