The wild west in South Carolina

Oh, those state lawmakers are at it again reminding BoardBuzz of a Will Rogers insight: "Politicians are doing the best they can according to the dictates of no conscience."

In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, the South Carolina House will consider a bill this week to allow concealed weapons on campus. If this had been the case at Virginia Tech, reasoned the bill's sponsor Rep. Jeff Duncan, a massacre of that magnitude would not have taken place. He apparently has a friend in Newt Gingrich as BoardBuzz recently reported here.

The Charleston Post and Courier reports that:

Nearly 20 lawmakers have signed on to a measure that would allow concealed weapons on public school and college campuses. If signed in to law, South Carolina would join Utah as the only states that have laws allowing people to carry hidden weapons on campuses.

Nationwide, 38 states, including Virginia and South Carolina, ban weapons at schools. Of those, 16 explicitly prohibit weapons on college campuses, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The measure faces some formidable opposition including U.S. Attorney Alberto Gonzales, the American Association of University Professors, and the South Carolina School Boards Association, whose executive director Paul Krohne commented, "It is disconcerting that we are considering a proposal that would open the flood gates for more weapons in school - even lawful ones."

I can see the future headlines in South Carolina:

Killer Escapes Bloodbath

Associated Press: A disturbed student opened fire in a classroom today prompting other students to fire back. Unfortunately, students who fired at the escaping killer were off target and killed two other students in the classroom.

Meanwhile, one student who pursued the killer out into the hallway was shot to death by another student who saw him emerging with a handgun. That other student, drawn by the sound of gunfire, was subsequently shot to death by a third student who observed him shooting in the hallway. In the confusion, two groups of students at either end of the hallway began shooting at each other, thinking each was the initial killer. That melee resulted in three deaths and four critically injured.

Police say the original gunman apparently escaped with others who fled the building when the extended gunfire began.

What's more disconcerting is that if someone else had carried a weapon may there would be more people alive to discuss what happened! This just goes to show you... outlawing weapons will not keep people from being killed by them.

Funny how you only list the opposition.

Also, notice how the opposition that you list is all government employees. Power to the people! (And I don't mean the government people.)

Oh, that's just great South Carolina. Thousands of women suffering monthly bouts of PMS allowed to carry handguns.
