And the winners are ...

American School Board Journal's 2007 Magna Awards , presented in conjunction with Sodexho School Services, have been announced and the list is full of distinguished school districts. There are three grand prize winners, representing three enrollment categories: less than 5,000 students; 5,000 to 20,000 students; and 20,000 or more students.

Drumroll, please .... and the winners are the Newark Central School District in Newark, N.Y.; the Bremerton School District 100-C in Bremerton, Wash.; and the Educational Service Center of Franklin County in Columbus, Ohio. The districts were recognized for outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools.

Newark Central won in the under 5,000 student enrollment category for “Board Linkage
Meetings to Foster School Improvement,” a school board initiative to involve stakeholders in the
district’s decision making. Board members met with various school and community groups. This
ongoing communication and feedback has led to improved programs that better serve students.

In the 5,000 to 20,000 student enrollment category, the Bremerton School District 100-C was
honored for its “Starting Early for Success,” a multifaceted program to better prepare children for
kindergarten. The district joined forces with Head Start and early education and child care
providers to offer literacy programs. They also began a free extended kindergarten program. As a
result, more incoming kindergarteners have the skills they need to do well.

The Educational Service Center of Franklin County was recognized in the over 20,000 student
enrollment category for “WINGS/Project Plus,” two programs for high school students with
developmental disabilities. Students receive academic help, social skills, job training, and
worksite experience. The board helped plan and start the program to ease students’ transition
from school to adult life.
