ASBJ begins series on how schools help at-risk children

The first in a series of articles on how schools help children at risk appears in the December issue of the American School Board Journal. Over the next several months, ASBJ will examine the lives of at-risk children and explore the ways in which schools are trying to meet their needs. The December segment, "Children at Risk", examines the persistence of poverty in the United States. Experts say that poverty rate for children under six years of age is 20 percent — a total of more than 13 children. ASBJ looks at the debate over which institutions can best help those children. In the end, Robert Balfanz of Johns Hopkins says it is the schools. "I'm not saying they can do it alone," he says. "But they have to be the fundamental driver for giving kids the chance to come from poverty and go on to success."
