Anchors Away in LA

Talk about being qualified for a job. The Los Angeles school board has unanimously selected someone who is evidently comfortable with battle tactics to be its next superintendent. The decision to hire retired Navy Vice Admiral David Brewer did not sit well with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who has been waging and winning a personal war to gain control of the school district. The law bestowing his new powers doesn't take effect until January 1. If it's found to be constitutional.

NSBA has been strongly opposing the mayor takeover too. Read more here.

But, score one for the school board, which according to today's report in the LA Times, "was in no mood to wait for the new rules to take effect or even for the mayor to return from abroad" before they announced their selection.

The article reports, "Running the Los Angeles Unified School District is about 'managing a complex organization with limited resources. That's what it comes down to," said Scott Plotkin, executive director of the California School Boards Association. 'That and inspiring, leading people. Brewer will be a true leader for the district and a force in the community on behalf of the district, which is something they badly need."

Amen.

I completely agree. Superintendents of large districts don't need to be masters of pedagogy, budgeting or anything else. They can hire people to oversee every aspect of the district. Superintendents must be inspirational leaders. They must have the ability to prompt others to recognize their own skills and perceive their ability to make a difference. These superintendents must have the ability to motivate others to work hard and achieve important objectives.
