Board member calls for, ahem, a crack down

BoardBuzz thought we'd heard it all last week when we reported that a principal in Indiana suspended 128 students in one day for dress code violations, but this story out of Dallas takes the cake.

School board member Ron Price has asked the city council to crack down (sorry, BoardBuzz had to say it) on low-riding pants that show the wearers' underwear. "I think it's disrespectful, it's dishonorable and it's disgusting," said Price. "I have no problem with the top of your Hanes label being shown. My problem is when grown men walk about the city with pants below their buttocks." He further requested that the council strengthen the law against showing one's underwear in public.

Some controversy has been sparked, because critics of Price's request say it diverts police attention from real crimes. Besides, who says when too much is too much? The Dallas School District already requires that students tether their trousers, but Price wants to take it further than the schoolhouse. NSBA Attorney Naomi Gittins noted in the article that school districts have a fairly wide discretion to set dress codes.

Submit a comment and let us know what you think of Price's proposal.
