The rap on recess
Since time began, schoolchildren have looked forward to that most coveted time of the day: recess. Lately, the decline in the amount of time children get to play at school has caused the National PTA and Cartoon Network to partner for a Rescuing Recess campaign that includes student letter-writing to save this endangered species.
CNN is reporting that the new study about food and exercise from the National Center for Education Statistics called Calories In, Calories Out, indicates that "the proportion of schools that don't have recess ranges from 7 percent for first and second grades to 13 percent by sixth grade." School leaders blame academic requirements and test preparation for the decline.
Elementary schools in lower income areas offer less recess and less overall time for exercise than other schools. USA Today reports that, according to the report, "Public schools with more wealthy children get, on average, about 50 percent more recess a day than those with the most low-income students."
