Judge blocks N.C. eye exams for kindergartners

BoardBuzz reported last month on an attempt by the North Carolina legislature to require children to have eye exams before entering kindergarten. Yesterday, a judge ruled in favor of the North Carolina School Boards Association, which sued to block the law citing the cost (between $65 and $120) and burden on parents. Seemed unnecessary when kindergartners already have to be screened for vision problems. The judge's order prevents the state from enforcing the eye exams until at least July 1, 2007, and bars further court proceedings until October. Details from AP here.

BoardBuzz assumes that will give the sponsor of the bill, who happens to be an optomistrist, enough time to think of other ways he can play school board.
