Legislature as school board...again

The North Carolina School Boards Association and 11 local school districts filed a lawsuit yesterday to block a new mandatory eye exam program for kindergartners set to begin in the fall. The requirement was added to the state's budget last year by the House speaker, an optometrist.

From the Charlotte Observer:

The state's largest medical organization, the state society of eye physicians and surgeons and the school boards announced their opposition to the eye exam last month. The doctors argue that the tests are expensive and unnecessary. The school boards contend that the exams create a logistical nightmare and require them to prohibit a child from attending school unless the youngster has proof of receiving the exam. Top leaders in the state senate have vowed to try and repeal the eye exam requirement when the General Assembly session begins in May.
