109th Congress: Take two

After meeting with members of Congress earlier this month in conjunction with NSBA's FRN Conference, school board members have taken the "put public education first" message home.

New York school board member Anita Feldman says Congress needs to make up for its disappointing performance last year.

I was lucky enough to be one of those who went to Washington. Before I went, I learned things about my district that will help our Board understand issues and make, hopefully, better decisions.
One of the things that I learned is that most, if not all, members of Congress are pretty shy today about any "freebies" as handed out by lobbyists. To my mind, this creates a vacuum, if just a slight one. We School Board Members can slide right into that vacuum! Other, paid, voices will not be so loud this year; we have an opportunity to be heard!
I presented this to my Board at our regular meeting, and one member pointed out that we can muster a serious number of phone calls and emails among our school communities if we will just mobilize it. Let's do it!
