Celebrating public education in a big way

A big pow-wow to celebrate public education is getting some high profile attention. Scheduled for March 24-25 at Pier 94 in New York City, the event will feature a town hall meeting with Tom Brokaw, a speech on democracy and civic education by actor Richard Dreyfuss, and a forum on global education facilitated by Gwen Ifill. The gathering, hosted by two public television stations that serve the tri-state area, is expected to draw 20,000 educators, including school board members, and will feature two days of professional development and a leadership summit of K-12 school administrators, policy makers, and school board members.

The approach is decidedly upbeat as the event is being billed as a celebration of teaching and learning. Note to John Stossel: Your invitation is not in the mail. More details here.

There could be no better combination than public television and educators coming together to celebrate the importance of teaching and learning for the future generation of leaders.
