Note to media: Tell the impact on schools of auto plant closings

Continued bad news from the auto industry Monday. Ford Motor Co. announced it will cut between 25,000 and 30,000 factory jobs and about 12 percent of its management team by 2012, and shut 14 manufacturing facilities. The Detroit Free Press did what has become too predictable: It sent reporters to interview patrons at local bars. But the paper at least mentions just briefly the impact such vast change can have on local schools, in this case in Wixom, Mich. To the media: We have heard the bar stories. The country needs to understand the impact such change can have on local schools. It is an important story. Don't miss it.

The Free Press reports that Wixom has done a good job of diversifying its economy in recent years. But close a single plant that is nearly one-half mile long, and local schools will be affected. In many ways.

Other U.S. plants identified by Ford for closing are in St. Louis, Mo., Atlanta, and Batavia, Ohio. But more bad news is coming. Ford identified Monday just one-third of the plants it intends to idle. Two more assembly plants will be identified by the end of the year, while the remaining cuts will be announced later.
