ABC News special looks to slam public schools

Looking for something to do Friday night? Then pull up a chair in front of your television for an ABC News 20/20 program entitled "Stupid in America: How We Cheat Our Kids." With a headline like that, and after reading the show's preview, there may be good reason to hold low expectations that the program will be fair and balanced. We'll see.

However, there's no better defense than a good offense (didn't someone famous say that?), so you can get ahead of the curve by reading up on the progress that public education is making in your state and across the nation. Find a great list of resources on NSBA's web site here. Will any of these statistics make it into tonight's 20/20 broadcast?

Also helpful is the NEA's state-by-state breakdown of public education progress.

Once you've watched, BoardBuzz invites you to pen a thought on the 20/20 message board here.

Agree 100%. Useful and objective information has never been Stossel's strong point. Good to see he's staying consistent.

You guys are ridiculous. Your posted statistics that Stossel didn't mention actually prove his point. Of course there's been improvement when you start off so low. Even within those statistics you only mention ONE area where we do well against other nations - civics. CIVICS? "Concepts of Democracy, Citizenship, and Government"? I hope we did well. We've only been a democracy longer than anyone else. Sad.

I saw the show.

It made some solid points.

I think while his bias may show, it is information that needs to be discussed.

Right on John Stossel. We have problems in South Carolina. Our local news knows and does nothing. The South Carolina Dept of Education knows and does nothing. We even had United States Dept of Education Office of Civil Rights looks and found them guilty... and it still going on. Horry County has the third biggest school district in South Carolina, and they have told us parents we can do what we want... and they are... the state will not do anything... the federal goverment will not do anything. I wish the educators will talk and walk the walk, but now it is all talk... John come back... you have only touched on this problem here... THERE IS ALOT MORE.
