U.S. Chamber thinks ranking schools is the answer

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce yesterday announced that it plans to rank school districts according to their performance in the hope of elevating student achievement in the face of increasing global competition. While officials at the chamber say they are "just starting to think this through and no process has been developed yet for the rankings," the idea apparently resonated enough with the chamber's executive director to mention it in his annual state of the American business address to the media. NSBA's executive director Anne Bryant reacted to the idea on National Public Radio's Marketplace program last evening. The bottom line? "You don't fatten an elephant by weighing it, so we're not sure how ranking schools will improve their performance," Bryant said.
