The real whiners

Oh, those whiny school boards! You know the ones we are talking about: Perpetually "angling for revenues," according to this editorial concerning Pennsylvania's Act 72 slots-to-pay-for-schools mess. The editorial calls Act 72 "a horrible law," but then smacks around school boards. A Pennsylvania school board member smacks back:

"Guess who was left out of consideration when the law was being formulated? The school boards. Guess who was faced with the decisions to raise taxes a fixed amount in exchange for an unknown decrease some time in the future? The school boards... Remember, school boards are the most direct form of representative government in the state, and probably the most accountable.

"We are in our districts every day and keep in touch with our taxpayers. We deserve to be consulted with before being mandated to change how those same taxpayers will be affected."
