Remembering Sandra Feldman

The longtime leader of the American Federation of Teachers died Sunday at age 65. She will be remembered for working to chart a course for the nation's second largest teachers' union that diverged at times from the larger and sometimes more strident National Education Association. The Associated Press notes that she supported tough entrance requirements for teachers and standardized tests, and opposed social promotion. Like NSBA, she was not shy about acknowledging the No Child Left Behind Act's shortcomings but recognized the good in the act and warned against the perils of criticism that goes overboard. Feldman's fierce focus on the problems and needs of poor and urban children will be her legacy. More from the New York Times here, Education Week here, Eduwonk here.
