The sniping and the challenge
While politicians point fingers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, local schools nationwide have kept their eyes focused on helping thousands of displaced students. The mantra going forward has been "we'll deal with the details later, this isn't the time for red tape slowing the process." Unfortunately, in Houston, the teachers' union appears to be taking a different tack.
"The Houston Federation of Teachers said yesterday it is concerned that the Houston Independent School District has not set up a process for hiring teachers for the thousands of New Orleans children who will start registering Wednesday to attend Houston public schools." Hmmmm. Could the union be saying don't hire too many non-union or alternatively certified teachers?
Many school districts have collossal challenges ahead. Here is betting they will rise to it, and that the main positive story out of this tragedy is how well America's public schools in at least 15 states rise to the challenge and do great jobs for these students. Just a few examples here, here and here from Texas and California (hat tip: educationnews.org).
