Two languages are better than one?

New research finds that growing up bilingual is good for the brain. It seems that children who speak two languages not only have a much slower rate of mental decline as they age, they are also more mentally adept. MSNBC, Toronto's Globe and Mail, and the Washington Post all have reports on the study, which appeared in this month's edition of the journal Psychology and Aging.

Unfortunately the study only looked at students who learned two languages at home, not at children who acquired a second language at school. Sounds like a follow-up study is in order.
