State roundup: School boards making news in NJ, MI, PA and LA
Several state school boards associations have been in the headlines lately. New Jersey School Boards Association Executive Director Edwina Lee in the Philadelphia Inquirer on a tax proposal: "Before the state puts money into rebate programs... it needs to meet its obligation for essential public services, like education." Michigan Association of School Boards' Don Wotruba in The Saginaw News on a new state law to consolidate election dates and hopes that it will increase voter turnout for school board elections and votes on bond issues: "We have a right and a duty to vote. It brings about a government that better represents the views of the community."
Pennsylvania School Boards Association's Dave Davare tells the Valley News Dispatch some of the history behind skyrocketing health care costs for school districts. Meanwhile, Louisiana School Boards Association lobbyist Ron Wascom told a legislative committee that school boards' health care costs are up $300 million in the last five years.
