Washington recall dropped

More news on school board recalls. The Supreme Court in the state of Washington ruled last week that a year-old campaign to recall two Marysville school board members, which emerged following a very nasty teachers' strike, may proceed. But now the recall group, backed by the teachers' union, has decided to drop the recall effort. The local media tells the tale as if the recall backers are making a sacrifice for community unity and "the best interest of the school district." Perhaps these concerns should have been considered a little sooner. And perhaps the local media should have done a better job reporting on the origins of the recall and on union tactics during the strike. Here is American School Board Journal's recent article (pdf) about the current state of school board recalls, with some background on the Marysville recall campaign, and comments from one of the recall targets.
