The loss of literature

Are Americans forgetting how to read? American School Board Journal asks that very question in its new issue. The piece points out that yes, fewer Americans are reading literature, then asks: Is this evidence of an imminent cultural crisis, as the National Endowment for the Arts suggests? Here is another piece in the same issue, on why students resist reading. And here is a terrific recent article in the Washington Post by a high school English teacher who makes some key observations on students and reading. Among them: Video games may be taking over your child's life. Especially if your child is male.
