What's in a school name?

There are lots of challenges for districts laboring to break up huge schools into more successful small schools or schools-within-schools, a promising approach to reform that has many adherents and is getting big support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These challenges, school districts like New York City's have found, include dealing with the impact on existing larger schools, somewhat higher costs from loss of economy of scale, and the need for more principals and school level administrators.

But apparently there's another big hurdle that may have been overlooked by many observers: what to name all these new schools. Education historian and commentator Diane Ravitch has a humorous take on New York's efforts in the New York Sun, here. Chicago Public Schools should make sure it has this issue on its radar. Others too.
