Tonight's top story: Education funding formula follies. Now back to you, Dan Bob.

The biggest news early on in state legislative sessions is fairly simple when it comes to public education. It is funding, in state after state. State legislators, driven by busy activists and funding equity lawsuits, are once again working to not only plug short-term gaps, but some are at least paying lip service in attempting to craft long-term solutions. A legislative panel in Montana has what it considers a new funding formula idea, but Lance Melton, executive director of the Montana School Boards Association, has his doubts. And more 'help' for schools in Ohio: State legislators have been unable to fix a funding glitch that may cost schools there $67 million in federal funds for disabled students. If the issue is not resolved, Toledo schools, in just one example, could lose funding that could support 45 teachers, and would lead to a host of other cuts.
