Plugged-in kids

While this comes as probably no surprise to BoardBuzzers, more kids than ever are using technology to stay connected with friends and complete class assignments. A recent survey by NetDay, a national education technology non-profit group, showed that 81 percent of responding students have at least one e-mail account and 75 percent have at least one instant messaging (IM) screen name. And no surprise to principals, 58 percent of students who responded to the survey have a cell phone, and 68 percent of those students bring their cell phone to school. NSBA explored the legal issues surrounding cell phones and other 21st century classroom intrusions in a recent online discussion.

Other challenges come with technology, too. NetDay's survey found that 35 percent of responding students know someone who's cheated online and that another 31 percent say they have (or someone they know has) been bullied or harassed by another student online.

Wanting to see technology's benefits and challenges firsthand, an NSBA-sponsored group just returned from the De Soto, Kan., Public Schools where visitors saw virtual dissections in science class and a student laptop program. The De Soto Explorer reports on the visit here. Learn more about how you can get on board for next year's site visits to three technological innovative school districts sponsored by NSBA's Technology Leadership Network.
