Non-partisan elections: The answer to all school board political ills?

Here are several voices in support of non-partisan school board elections. "School board races outside city districts are like no other elections," reports Rochester, N.Y., Democrat and Chronicle. "Void of party politics, the races are as close to the grass roots as campaigns can get. Board hopefuls don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to establish campaigns and Web sites. Rather, candidates greet parents at school events, speak at candidate nights and hope for good word of mouth.

"And on Election Night, there are no big galas — just waiting by the phone for the 9 p.m. results before going to bed. For most, the entry-level elected position has less to do with laying the groundwork for higher office and more to do with trying to help students."
